Season Over

Once again the Vikes did not show up in the 1st half and it cost em. Not that it mattered because the Redskins won as expected but still. The last game was not a total fiasco thanks to a 4th quarter comeback by Tavaris. Up until the 4th the Vikes were doing their level best to lose. A fumble by Chester Taylor cost a touchdown as did a dropped bomb to Troy Williamson and a saftey for blocking at the face mask. AP couldn't get on track once again, but as a team the Vikes ran well thanks to Chester and T Jack.

Unbelieveably the game went to overtime where the Vikes promptly fumbled the ball and lost. The Vikes were 2 overtime losses from 10-6 this season. Like I said before I consider 8-8 a good season cause I didn't think we would do this good.

I am not sure who I want in the playoffs this year. I don't really think an NFC team has a chance and don't really want the Cowboys or Pack to win it all anyways. In the AFC I like the Pats, Colts, Steelers, Chargers, and Jax. I do not think we should crown the perfect Patriots just yet because I think any of these 5 teams could take it. There should be some great playoff games in the AFC this year.

Question: Does the BP think the Patriots have to win it all to be considered the greatest team in NFL history?

The answer to this question is NO. I think if the Pats win one more game to put their record at 17-0, same as 72 Dolphins, than they should be considered equal with the 72Dolphins. If the Pats go 18-1, I think that is still good enough to make them the greatest team in NFL history. I think if the Pats get win 18 than win 19 is a given.

I got my 2008 BPS catalog in the mail today. It is always interesting to look through the catalog and see the latest and greatest in bass fishing tomfoolery. All those new rods, reels, lures, colors and more. How exciting!!!

White Christmas

Merry Christmas!!!

Christmas Eve: I went over to M&D's friends Marylin and Lem and had turkey dinner with their family and friends. Marylin has worked with Land O Lakes at FLW events and will be doing it again this year after being away from it for a couple of years. Marylin has given me a bunch of FLW tour DVD's. They open presents on Christmas eve and I even got a couple; it was a surprise to me. Went to 10PM candle light service with M & D. Stayed up late and watched a Christmas Story with Mom.

Christmas Day:
Minnesocold had it's snowiest Christmas since the 1950's. 4"-6" in the Cities It was beautiful and thankfully didn't have any problems with the long drive into the cities and back.

The day started out early cause I woke up at 6:30am and couldn't get back to sleep. No I was not overly excited about presents. I got up at 8 and took the dogs out. Mom was busy preparing Turkey legs and stuffing. Before heading South M, D, and I opened presents up North: I got this cool Wheel of Fortune TV videogame (Could not solve the 1st and only puzzle I tried; I would have won a brand new Cybercar had I solved it) I got a long sleeved Timberwolves shirt and some sweet fleece PJ bottoms. No Christmas Stocking this year. BOO!

We hit the road a little after 11am

It was a fun day spent with family down in Bloomington (Older bro Jeff, M & D, Youngest bro Todd, his wife Kristen and the two nieces Isabelle Grace (3) Mallory Joy (1). ) When we first arrived the girls were still at nap time so Todd and I played Wii. Todd made a Mii (a Mii is a we character) of me that was a pretty good likeness. We started out with bowling and once I had a couple of practice frames done. Todd and I played a few games with Todd beating me every time. Wii then moved on to Baseball and I proceeded to beat Todd each game. In one of the games I won by the "Mercy Rule" when I got up 5-0 after a Melinda Doolittle Mii Grand Slam. Todd went to wake up the girls and I tried some Wii golf which was very hard because it seemed like there was no way to hit the ball soft.

Once the girls were up it was play time. Belle excitedly showed the 2 Uncles her new Christmas Toys (A little fort with slide, some wooden food, and a bunch of noise making musical instruments). Mallory and Flash joined in the fun occasionally. We played until Dinner which was a traditional turkey feast with Vegi Queesh for UJ. After dinner we played for about an hour until it was present time. While we were playing a Buck and two Doe's came up in the yard and were right outside the window (Pretty Cool).

Mallory got a noice making thing from GM that she just loved. Belle got a bunch of toys and books and blocks; She didn't know what to do with the $50 dollar bill I gave her except give it to her Dad. I got a $40 Gander Gift Card and $20 bucks. M&D got one of those digital picture frames with 4GB of memory, now that's gonna be a lot of pictures. I really don't remember what anybody else got cause I was so busy watching the girls have fun.

After the frivolity we ate Christmas cookies then said goodbye's around 6PM. Jeff was going to stay later. Our trip back was slow at first, but once we got north of Elk River there was much less snow and things speeded up.

It was really nice Christmas!!!

Vikes -Skins
Post-Game Reaction:
At least the Vikes did not throw in the towel in the 2nd half and end up totally embarrassed. If we did not have that review penalty for 12 men on the field and had gotten that turnover, the game might have gotten interesting. As it was we were never really in the game thanks to that disaster of a first half. As a whole things just didn't break the Vikes way very often today. I don't know if tonights game was just a preview of what we would have witnessed in the playoffs from a Childress team. I don't think we will get the answer to that question this season. I expect Washington to beat the Cowboys who don't have anything to play for and the Vikes won't make the playoffs yet again.

Certainly a lot of fault goes to the offence and Tavaris, but I think for the Vikes to be competitive the defence has to play much better than they did tonight. The Redskins were able to sustain medium length drives, made big plays, and did not turn the ball over. In retrospect I think it was not good that the Skins touchdown was called back on replay, thus leading to that safety. A safety is a turnover plus 2 points. The Skins just had it too easy on offence in the 1st half. If we cut 2 out of 3 of their 1st half touchdowns to fieldgoals, it is a much different game.

The Skins were just the better team tonight and are probably a better team period. Tavaris is still green and our running game with AP/CT is inconsistant (actually close to non-existant in this game). Overall I think this season was a positive one whether we finish 8-8 or 9-7. I thought the team was gonna finish 4-12, 5-11, or 6-10. As it turns out we might end up one missed field goal away from 10-5. Who knows, we might even give the Packers a run for the division title next year or then again we could take a step backward. Hopefully AP will improve rather than the drop off as we have seen since the 49er game.

Liveblogging the Game:
And the choke is on. Tavaris 1st pass for INT. Somehow we get lucky and stop em on 4th down on the inch line thanks to instant replay. So we get the ball on the inch line and proceed to hand off to our fullback Tony Richardson. He doesn't get the ball out of the endzone, Safety. Well 2 points is better than 7. But wait Redskins get the free kick and take it the distance. Skins 9 Vikes 0

Vikes 3nd offensive possession. No where on 1sr and 2nd down. Troy Williamson catches ball 1yard short of 1st. Punt

Stop the Skins deep, get good field position, do nothing thanks to a false start penalty on 3rd down and Tavaris with poor throw on 3rd down. Miss 52 yard fieldgoal so Skins get good FP.

Madden says Tavaris doesn't have NFL mechanics and I think he is right.

Skins get into 51 yard FG range but a bad snap botches that. Vikes with good FP.

We haven't seen much of AP at this point. Only 3 carries for 3 yards. We do make it past mid field but Shencoe fumbles it, Skins ball with good FP!

D holds Skins Punt.

Come on Tavaris and AP, we need you to show up now!!!

Tavaris throws up another bad INT and the Skins take this one for 7. Skins 16 Vikes Zip
I hate to say it but I'm faulting the play caller for that INT. On 1st down is a roll out pass that turns into a scramble for 1 yard. Then on 2nd down we pass and that is the INT. 2nd down should have been a run.

Vikes get ball on 12. Make 1 1st and out. AP 1 more carry for nadda.

Redskins make 2 1st downs and it's the 2 minute warning. I have decided NO blogging of the 2nd half. So far the Vikes have way to many mistakes 3 tunovers and 1 fumble that we got back. NOT GOOD.

Skins driving, now in the red zone. NOT GOOD!

Half Back option pass works to perfection. Randle El wide open in the end zone. 22-0!!!

What to say at this point, the queens are getting it handed to them. What a sucky game to watch!!! AP: 5 carries for 4 yards. Tavaris 7/11 which wouldn't be so bad except for 2 INT's. Add Shencoe's fumble and we are lucky it isn't worse.

2nd Half Question: Will the Vikes be embarrassed like the last Green Bay game? It sure is heading that way.

This Sunday in Football:
The Packers and Bears do the Vikes no favors as the Bears crush the Pack at Soldier field. This means that Dallas clinched home field and will not have anything to play for next week against the Redskins, thus the Redskins will probably win this game if the playoffs are on the line.

The NY Giants do the Vikes no favors in beating the Bills and clinching the #5 seed. Had the Giants lost they would have been in huge danger of getting bounced from the playoffs by the Vikes because we owned the tie breaker.

The Saints effectively eliminated themselves from the playoff chase. For them to get in the Vikes have to lose out and the Skins would need to lose to the Cowboys in the last game of the season and the Saints would have to win next week. A very unlikely scenario to fall in place.

Bottom Line: As I stated earlier, the Vikes season really comes down to this game against the Redskins. I am not confident.

Bassfan's Jay Kumar on FLW's Million Dollar Fantasy Bass Fishing

The Wall Street Journal on FLW Fantasy Bass Fishing

From WSJ
The Web site, FantasyFishing.com, was tested last year and attracted several hundred thousand participants.

I'm sorry but that can't be right. I don't think even 5,000 people played FLW Fantasy Bass Fishing Game last year and ESPN's version only gets about 12,000. I think they must have mistaken participants for web hits.

At the bottom of the WSJonline there is linking to blogs on this subject and guess who they linked too?

YOU CAN GET RICH playing FLW Fantasy Bass Fishing

I found out from Hellabass that FLW Fantasy Bass Fishing 2008 is open for registration. Here is the hype:

Easy to play:
All you have to do is pick 10 pro anglers for each FLW Tour event and the Forrest Wood Cup, and you could win upwards of $1.7 million in cash. That's it. It's that simple. In 2008, there are 7 tournaments, and you could win $100,000 at each of those tournaments. Not only that, at season's end, the top player with the most cumulative points will win a record $1 million* in cash - guaranteed. It's that easy, it's free, and it's that rewarding. CONTEST BEGINS JANUARY 15, 2008.

Here are some of the prizes you could win:
$1 Million Grand Prize
7 $100,000 First-Place Prizes
Chevrolet Vehicles
Ranger Boats
Yamaha ATV and Yamaha PWC
Wal-Mart Gift Cards
BP Gas Cards ...and much, much more

Unfortunatly it is not the same game as last year. I don't see the point in having to pick 10 anglers instead of only 5. The scoring is a bit more complicated, but I think I like that aspect.

Also:
LIMIT ONE PRO TEAM/ENTRY PER PERSON/EMAIL ADDRESS PER GAME. Any attempt by any participant to select more than one Pro Team per game by using multiple/different email addresses, identities or other methods will disqualify that participant and void that participant's Pro Teams.

It looks like the Posse is now busted up because I cannot select teams for others. I don't think I want to take any chances with a possible $100,000 or $1million on the line. In the past this prohibition was not in place; you just had to have separate email addresses.

Another change for this year is "Players Advantage." You pay $40 bucks (comes with a $15 Walmart gift Card) and get access to possibly valueable info such as the previously free Pundit Picks and FLW Live. (Is FLW Live really not going to be free this year???) I am sure having this service will make selecting names a bit easier, but I really don't think it will guarentee better line ups for those that have it. I will have to think about whether or not I want the service which rings out to about $3.60 per tournament.

In addition to the $1million at the end of the season, you can win up to $5 million for picking a correct Top 7 in order in any one of the 7 tournaments. Of coarse the odds of doing this are well beyond Powerball odds, but it's cool that they are offering it none the less.

This bonus contest is predicated on when you sign up:
Sign up between ...and your bonus for picking the top 7 anglers in the right order is
December 21 and December 28th $5 MILLION*
December 29th and January 5th $4 million*
January 6th and January 14th $3 million*
After January 15th $2 million*

Making it through!

Vikes Win 20-13!!!

The Vikes D came to play in the 2nd half and the Offence managed to get 2 touchdowns, which means the Vikes are now 8-6. Tavaris had 1 INT in the 2nd half, but that was just past mid-field, otherwise his 2nd half play was acceptable. I was quite concerned when the Vikes missed the extra point on their first touchdown, but they managed to make the 2 point conversion on a Kyle Boler (really it was Brooks Bollinger thanks Hellabass) scramble (Tavaris went out for a couple of plays with cramps). AP did not put on nearly the show as he did in the first Bears match-up, but when it counted in the 2nd half he came through big. Chester Taylor also had a decent game running.

Well next game is the most important one of the year.

SKOAL VIKINGS!!!

Halftime

Well I suppose it's a bit of a choke job by the Vikes at this point. 3 turnovers included a totally bone headed interception with under a minute to go that resulted in a Bears touchdown. Somehow we did manage to drive the field and get a last second field goal thus the score is only 13-6 Bears. I suppose it could be a lot worse. The defence is playing quite well and Devin Hester hasn't been a factor. The Vikes have been their own worst enemy on offence. We also have had the bounces not go our way with a Ferguson drop that turned into an INT and AP fumbling the ball when we were deep in Bears territory. The Bears are doing a fair job of holding the running game in check. Tavaris had an OK half until that boneheaded INT.

We get the ball to start the 3rd quarter. The Vikes need to pick it up several notches or else this one's gonna be a loss.

Saints and Skins

With all but the Vikes game in this week, the playoff picture has seeming gotten much clearer. The Vikes competition for the final wild card spot in the NFC is the New Orleans Saints and the Washington Redskins. We currently have a half game lead over both teams, so if we lose to the Bears all three teams records will be tied. From the looks of it, the season is going to come down to the match up next Sunday night vs. the Skins. I would say there is about a 95% chance that the team who wins this game makes the playoffs. If we lose this game there is a possibility 9-7 won't be good enough because the Skins will own the tie breaker.

So basically we have to beat the Skins plus win 1 other game. The Vikes could do it, but I am still not gonna hold my breath. We will just have to see how they play the Bears and espcially the Skins.

GO VIKES!!!

Not that I care but the Timberwolves are once again the Timberpup's. They are once again by far the worst team in the NBA. Could this be our year to secure the #1 draft pick? Meanwhile Garnett is sitting pretty in Bosten.

2 out of 3

Vikes 7-6!!!
Another week and another Vikes victory which really wasn't to much of a surprize over the 49ers. Now is where it really gets down to it. If the Vikes can pull out two of the next 3 they will almost certainly be a playoff team. I think at 9-7 they deserve to get in.

Can we beat Da Bears? Maybe

Can we beat the Skins? Maybe

Can we beat the Broncos? Hopefully it will not matter.

The End

Well Ice has the lakes locked up and there is no more bass fishing to be done. I think I will officially call BP vs. Duffman over at Week 25. Therefore

Summer of 2007
BP 6
Duffman 6

A tie, how lame is that? Beyond that, out of 25 weeks at least one of us hit the water on only 12 of them. If I would have fished like I normally do in the summer I would have blown Duffman away just for the simple fact that he would not be getting out nearly as much as me. I think we only fished head to head one or two weeks; The rest of the weeks it went to who ever went fishing. I think Duffman would have ruled had he not hurt his shoulder. I think Duffman caught the biggest fish, so really he wins.

On ice fishing: I had a dream last night that I was ice fishing. The electronics showed fish suspended, but I didn't catch any. I was unable to make the December meeting of the Fishers of Men club this week, therefore I did not have the chance to get to Vados to buy me some maggies. Without maggies I am hesitant to go out. Also the weather is cold and I don't have things rounded up. Snow on the ice is another factor that will make fishing unlikely for now. We probably won't have safe Ice for driving until around Christmas and the snow will make driving out difficult. Also the Explorer isn't working well and needs to be fixed. Oh well.

Vikes at .500
Well the Vikes destroyed the hapless Lions. It was a very good all around game for the squad and Tavaris actually looked competent. Will the roll continue? The Vikes should be able to beat the 49ers who have a poor run defence and lousy passing game. I think the Vikes season will come down to those next two games vs. the Bears, then Redskins. Both the Bears and Skins are in the wild card chase. The Bears will be out for revenge especially against AP who ran for 200+ vs the Bears in the first meeting. The Redskins have a stout run defence but it should help that this game is at the dome. I think if the Vikes can win 3 out of the next 4 that their playoff chances are pretty good.

If the Vikes actually make the playoffs, I could see them winning a game. Another shot at the Packers would be sweet. However, I am still on the pessimistic side reguarding our playoff chances.

Vikes Win in NY (really NJ)!!!
Could the Vikes actually make the playoffs? I'm not gonna hold my breath but at 5-6 they are in the race for a wildcard berth. Four of their last five games are against opponets with losing records (Bears, 49ers, Denver, Redskins) and the fifth game is this week against the Lions at home; The Lions have a 3 game losing streak. Three of the last five are home games. It's hard to believe but the Vikes could conceivably win out and be 10-6. I am guessing that 9-7 will be good enough for the playoffs. Like I said, I won't hold my breath even with AP coming back this week.

Ice Update:Ice is on Platte and Bulldog(???), however I am in no hurry to go out and test it. It's conceivable that I will be out within the next 2-3 weeks.

Happy Thanksgiving All!
Especially to family and the U.S. Armed Forces.

For the record: Thanksgiving 2007 was quiet with the Dinner being me, mom, Dad, and older brother Jeff. We all took an after meal nap. Todd and the girls were in Hoboken and Steve and the girls were in Florida. The food was excellent, Mom cooked a small turkey. There was a light dusting of snow on the ground, the Packers kicked Lion tail, the Cowboys kicked Jet tail, the Colts kicked somebodies tail that I didn't see cause it was on NFL network. The big news of the day was the Gander Mtn was open today, Tori Hunter signed a 90million $ deal with the Angels, and Jay Leno had to show last years Thanksgiving program due to the writers strike.

Also of note is that on November 20 was my 3rd Blogirthday or Blogiversary. You can check out the past 3 years in the archives which are down aways on the right colomn.

The return of Daunte...

Vikes Win!!!

Well Daunte Culpepper was back in Minnesota for a football game today. I was a big Culpepper supporter up until the point he gave up on the Vikes. At that point I joined the "Chokepepper" bandwagon and wished him nothing but failure. Failure is exactly where Dante landed, first with the Dolphins, now with the Raiders. I really could care less what happens to Dante from now on, I'm over it. It was however good to see the Vikes beat Daunte in there first meeting since the falling out.

It's kind of sad to say but Culpepper would be an upgrade from anything we have at the QB position right now. I just don't think Tavaris has it in him to be a big league quarterback.

It's really to bad that Adrian Peterson got injured last week, cause I think he would have had a shot at 200yards vs. the Raider run defence. Sure Chester did a great job with 164 and 3 TD's, but I think Adrian would have done even better.

As for the blowout by the Packers last week, that was just a pathetic performance by the purple. If I were Chilly I would have kicked the field goal rather than get the doughnut. It sucked that Mewelde Moore got in and had the ball bounce off his hands for a turnover in the red zone. After this game, I'm not so sure that coach Chilly should get a 3rd year.

ML Fall 07 Skunk

Well I finally got the boat hooked up and headed to Mille Lacs. I arrived at the access around 5:30PM and barely had enough daylight to accomplish my mission. My mission was to head out to Indian Point and log the same waypoints in the new GPS that were in the old GPS. Normally you would not have to go on the lake to do this, but my old GPS has lines in the Liquid Crystal Display missing and so you can't see what the coordinates of a given way point are; So for me to have the same waypoints I would have to physically run over the same spots and mark them in the new GPS. There was no wind and so it was easy to just use the electric trolling motor. There were 8-10 bobber fisherman on Indian Point but they were all far enough to the south that I was able to log in all my points. By the time I was done it was dark. Since there was no wind and still quite a few of the bobber brigade around I decided not to fish Indian Point.

I headed into Casino Bay (Sha bosh Kung) and made a full pass out to Sherman's point and back. I didn't even have a strike. Finding my way back in to the access was a little hairy, but I got it done without to much trouble. I got in around 9PM.

I talked to two boats at the access. One had gotten a couple and the other was skunked.

So that's it for my first Fall 07 walleye trip, Skunked.

To be honest, I don't know if I will do any more bass fishing this open water season. It is the time of year I'd rather be fishing salmon in Sconi or Pig walters on Mille Lacs. I won't be fishing salmon again this year, but should be hitting the water hard this week for walleye. I bought a new GPS and will want to start getting my money's worth out of it. Hopefully this Magellan will hold up unlike the last two I had. It is a big ? as to whether or not the the Magellan Sportrack will allow me to mark the exact same waypoints on Indian Point. Unfortunatly the coordinates are unreadable on Sportrack and so the only way to reproduce the same spots will be to do it on the lake. Who knows if the Sportrack will work or not for me to do that.

Skoal Vikings!!!

Had to do a like Vikes blogging after the big Chicago Win. It looks like us Vikes fans are gonna have something to watch in this Peterson kid. Wow!

Still I am not very optomistic about the team this season. Sure they could easily be 3-2 at this point, but Tavaris has a long way to go and Peterson isn't going to be scoring 3 TD's a week.

I am up in the air about Coach Chilly tending to be more negative than positive. That was quite a collapse against the Bears inspite of the win. If we beat Dallas I would be quite shocked.

BP vs Duffman Week 20

I didn't get out, to bad today would have been a good day to fish. Overcast and calm. How about you Duffman?

It's possible that the Duffman has left the building because I know from fishing MN he was out fishing sometime in the past couple of weeks. However no report, no score!

Well Duffman has reported in and caught a fish for week 20, it's all tied up again. I don't know that I will fish for bass any more this season. The contest does run until the end of November 2.

Wow I haven't been paying attention to the Bass fishing world. This week is the million dollar Forrest Wood Cup at Lake Ouachita. Click on BassFan for more info.

On the 35W Bridge Collapse:
Wow who would have thought something like that could happen without a major triggering event such as an earthquake or a bomb. Simply unbelieveable. I consider it quite amazing that more were not killed and seriously injured. In college I used to travel over this bridge quite often, but I haven't really had a reason to go over it in several years.

And to those who would use this as an excuse to make partisan political attacks or call for the raising of additional taxes. You SUCK because you have no shame!

Bass Major Onondaga Day Final

Fantasy Bass Fishing Notes: Well the day did not go as I hoped as Wolak really stumbled. I ended up with a 1,2,5 and 2,5,6. Kennedy had a dead fish penalty that relgated him to 2nd so BP1 really was unlucky today. The BPboys ended up with the 9th best line up of all players. Not bad, but not good enough for a prize.

Fantasy Bass Fishing Notes:
If only the tournament ended today. I have a 1,2,3, and a 1,3,5 line up therefore all my top 12 guys are fishing the top 6 tommorrow. Hopefully Wollack can hold on, Kennedy can move to 2nd and then either Peter T or Lintner can come in 3rd. There is definitely a shot at my best score of the year and I think prizes are in play.

Eddy's Launch with Dad.

The only fish of the trip for us.

Dad on the way off of Sherman's Point.

The Story: The weather was sunny mid 90's with a slight wind. We elected to fish out of the back of the launch again and where fishing out of the Flagship which is Eddy's Biggest Boat. The Bait Boy said the Flagship was the biggest launch on Mille Lacs and probably the world.

We headed out from Eddy's on a long haul north to Sherman's Pt. We set down in 8ft of water and before you could say fish on some lady caught a keeper walleye and then a 2lb smallmouth. Sherman's point turned out to be more of a smallie than walleye or perch spot. Dad had the first bite and it was a nice smallie that jumped and broke dad's line. More than an hour later dad got another bite but didn't convert. Right after Dad's miss my bobber went down and I landed a walter. This was to be my one and only bite. All in all at Sherman's 6-8 smallies about 4 walleyes (3 Keepers) a few misses and 1 perch. At about 8:30PM we headed out deeper to try and nab some deeper water eyes. In this spot Dad maybe had a bite but I'm skeptical. Out in the deep water 2 walters came in and 1 was lost by the lady right next to Dad.

We were in right at 10PM. The other 2 launches were nowhere to be seen. All in all a nice night but I could have used some water to drink, the two pop's didn't keep me adequately hydrated.

It's a tie!
BASS Champlain Score, Overall Place, MN League
BPboys 352, 6127, 23
BP1 352, 468, 2

FLW: DR score, DR Place, Overall Place
1 Cyb'sBboys 855, 53, 276
2 BP's Dad 817, 147, 677
3 Bp's Mommy 704, 880, 454
4 Minnesocold BP's Boys 680, 1093, 333
5 BPObro 669, 1181, 171
6 Schmenzig Bassmen 651, 1356, 310
7 Bass Pundit 1 649, 1375, 532

I am not sure but this may have been the last FLW Fishing Challenge stop. If so it was a very mediocre year with BPObro being the best team but not even cracking the top 100. I think Cyb's showing at the DR was one of the only two Top 100 showings all year. Definitely an off year for the posse.

Sullivan Lake with Jeff:
Jeff's first fish, a Larry.
Finally a pike.
Last fish of the day, a foul hooked Pumpkinseed.

The Story: Jeff arrived a little after 3PM and we were on the water right around 4PM. We headed to the South end of Sullivan to try for some Pike. We started out fishing in the wind and weeds and had no luck. Finally as we got out of the wind I brought in a little Pike. A lot of the water on the SE side was barren of weeds. When we finally hit a patch of good green weeds Jeff brought in a 13" bass on a spinnerbait. We fished this area for a while but didn't get anymore bites. I missed a bass off of the last dock we went bye.

At a quarter to 6PM we headed to the North end of Sullivan to try some reeds in the wind. We did one drift through and Jeff caught a small pike and the pumpkin seed. We called it a day right about 6:20PM. Not a great trip but not a skunking either. Where have all the Pike gone?

BP Fishing Report: Platte Lake 6/22/07

The Story: I put in at the E Sullivan access around 7PM and headed into Platte to fish Loon Sex Point. I only managed a single 12" fish on the Spro Bronze Eye. The wind was out of the SE, so I decided to fish the S shore of the big Western bay in Platte. I decided to hit a few docks before getting into the slop. This paid off with a 18.25" and 13" both on Bubblegum Zoom Super Flukes. Once I got to the slop I started throwing a black Zoom Horny Toad. I lost the legs off of 2 different toads, probably to small pike. I fished with a toad with stump legs and caught a nice 17.5". I also missed a bite from a smaller bass on this frog.

To end the night I elected to go to the North end of Platte rather than the Sullivan PRO. I managed a single 13" on the North End. I called it a night around 9:35PM.

Congratulations to 2007 Minnesota Bowfin Club Grand Champion Chuck Steinbauer!
He won the title with a 26 incher but the lake wasn't specified. The BP managed to make the article that appeared in the June 22 Brainerd Dispatch. As for me I did not manage to catch a single Doggie this year yet. Google "A Bowfin Champion at last Brainerd Dispatch" Registration required to read the article.

Smith Mountain Day Final & Platte/Sullivan Report

Congratulations to rookie Casey Ashley on his victory at Smith Mountain Lake!

BassFan Story...

BassFan Big Stick John Murray...

Fantasy Bass Fishing Notes: Well John Crews managed to move up to 8th which helped out BP 1 considerably. This tournament hopefully will be the low point of the season for the BP boys. Thanks Morris ya shmuck.

BPboys Score 193, overall place 4201 drop of 1,267places!! In MN Fantasy Bass league dropped from 10th to 18th.

BP1: Score 297, overall place 377 drop of 36 places. MN Fantasy Bass League still #1.

My Sunday Morning on Platte/Sullivan: Not the biggest guy in the world but I decided to take his picture anyway.
Once again my big fish of the day is a 17incher

The Story: I got up at 4:40am and was on the water by 5:20. I forgot to tie the rope off on the trailer, so I sent the boat off into the lake. I ended up wading in to get it, thankfully the area around this access is shallow and sandy. If it would have come to it there was a boat putting in after me. It was a sunny and clear morning with a light SE breeze, but mostly it was perfectly calm.

I first hit the Crossroads reed point, didn't get a bite. Next stop was the PRO river mouth. I got a 16", 15", and 12" (picture 1) on the Spro Bronze Eye Frog. Instead of following the river in, I decided to run to Platte. My first stop was just North of the GOMH fishing the Western shore. I managed to pick up a 15" there, then headed on to the North shore of Platte. The North end of Platte looked extremely fishy but all I caught were the 17" and a 11". Around 8am I headed back to the launch.

Had the GPS out in the boat today and the trophy did manage to hit 20mph, but mostly top end was 19mph.

Smith Mtn Day 3

BassFan Day 3 story...

Bass Fishing the Rock Lake PRO:
This was the first fish of the night. He gave his position away by hitting something. I moved in and capitalized. This was the only fish I got by that method tonight, though I had several tries at others.
This was my last fish on the night and the biggest by an inch.

The Story: I was up and fishing by about 6:40PM and stayed out till about 9:20PM. There was a slight SW breeze when I started which dwindled to calm. Temps in the mid 70's and the skies were mostly sunny/clear. I worked my way from East to West staying more to the North.

The action was far from fast and furious. I only caught 4 bass and these were the only serious blow ups I had. Maybe 2 other times fished swatted at the frog. Most of the time I was throwing the Bronze Eye Frog pictured; I threw the white swim jig too. All fish were caught on Kermit. The first fish was 16.5" and the last fish was the biggest at 17.5". All in all I don't think the Rock Lake PRO is holding the quality fish anymore, they have moved back into the lake.

Challenge Notes: It was a weak week where it only took a 17inch bass for the BP to win. Apparently Duffman slipped and separated his shoulder at the ramp today, Ouch. Hopefully he will be up and fishing again soon. Once again the wisdom of locking out Cyberfish was apparent as Cyb caught at least 3 fish over 17" this week.

It was Day 2 at the Elite Series Smith Mountain Lake:

BassFan Day 2 Story...

Rick Morris Day 1 DQ...
DQ My take: I think Rick Morris is in all probability lying about how the incident went down. He says he had a hand in the boat at all times yet he freed the fish from his topwater lure to get it in the boat. How would one do that one handed? Obviously you can't. As much as I hate to say it, I think the DQ had to have been the right call.

Fantasy Bass Notes: The Morris DQ will hit the BP boys hard during an already bad tournament. Day 2 was an improvement especially for BP 1, but the score is still well below the average score. BP 1 has 4 in the cut so hopefully more ground will be gained tommorrow.

BASS Smith Mountain Lake Day 1

BassZone on the water blog...

BassZone Day 1 story...

BassFan Day 1 story...

BassFan Big Stick John Murray...

Fantasy Bass Fishing Notes: Please let day 1 not mean Jack Squat. It's ugly for BP 1 with the best angler on the roster in 40th place. BP boys have Rick Morris in 6th, but that's it with 3 of the 5 below 50th.

Rock Lake Fishing Report 6/7/07

The main lure of the night a swim jig either white on white or white gold w/rootbeer. This particular swim jig was soon lost to a pike or dogfish.
Big fish of the night 17.25" caught on white/white swim jig in the pads.

The Story: After a warm and thundery afternoon a cool front swept through. I got tricked into thinking the winds were going to let up, but by the time I was in the Rock Lake Pro it was gusting 15-20mph out of the SW. It was partly cloudy when I started and overcast with light sprinkles when I left with the temp falling from near 70 to the lower 60's. I fished from about 7:30pm to 9:30PM.

Things started off quickly with a first five cast 13" bass. I then missed a couple of hits by the Beaver Lodge. I slowly made my way against the wind back into the river. I missed a couple of small fish in the river then turned around and headed out. I decided to drift with the wind as I left the river. I missed a strike on the Zoom Horny Toad but I was mainly throwing a white gold swim jig with rootbeer grub. On my first drift I got a few strikes and probably caught 1 bass. I had the tail of the grub bitten off a couple of times.

I decided I would use an all white swim jig on my second drift. I quickly got hit by a 14" bass by the Beaver Lodge. I then caught a dink. As I drifted out I got a solid hit and then my line broke. I retied with another white/white swim jig. I missed a few bites, had a tail bit off and caught 2 bass including the 17" (pictured) on my second pass.

I tried a third pass but don't think I got anymore fish, though I missed a strike or two. It was getting dark and the wind was a bear so I called it quits. On my way out of the PRO I stopped to fish the South side mouth along the bullrushes and weeds I managed to get a 16" on a Spro Bronze Eye Frog.

So I got about 6-7 fish total with the 17.25" being the biggest.

Fishers Of Men Club Beebe Lake Tournament 6/2/07

Fishing Report: Sullivan Lake 4/6/07...

Fishers of Men Fishing Club Twin Cities
Beebe Lake Tournament 6/2/07
I left for the tournament before 5AM which gave me plenty of time to make it to "Land of Promise" and Beebe Lake by 8am. With the extra time I decided to hit the Crow River outside of St. Michael to see if I could get a little topwater smallie action. I must have hit the rip rap around 6:45 and started working my way down. I thought I got a hit from something small and kept right on going. A little while later I did get a hit from an 8" smallie that managed to get the whole back treble in it's mouth. Without pliars it was tough to get out, but I did, hopefully with no damage done to the fish. A little ways farther down I got a harder hit and the fight was on. The fish got caught up in some debree, but it did not come off. As it turns out the fish was hooked on the front of the dorsal fin. Once again this was a pain to get out without pliars, but I managed to do it and release the fish. Not a bad start to the day, two smallies on the Clown Frenzy Popper.

My 5th fish of the day. Was 15" or 16"
My limit fish and last bass of the day. I think it went 16.5" and tied for my big fish.
Partner Wayne Jacobson staves off the skunk with a 15.5"=2.3lb Keeper.
Thompson scores a Beebe Lake Toad. 20"=5lbs
Mike with a chuncky 18.5=3.9lbs.

The Story: The scheduled start of the tournament was 9am but we got started a little late. The weather went from fairly sunny to increasing clouds. The wind was probably 5-10mph out of the south. I think we had 7 boats with 13 participants. The lake was bursting at the seems with Curly Leaf Pond Weed. I only found millfoil in "telephone pole bay."

The day started quite slow for Wayne and I. First we hit the whole Eastern and Southern Shore of the big island hitting both the inside and outside weed edge. Not a sign of a fish. So then we tried around the reed Islands, I did get something, probably a small pike, to slash at my Zoom Horny Toad. From the reed Islands we progressed to the SW side of the lake just below the Southern notch/bay. While working that weedline we ran into Mike Cummins who told us there were lots of bass that were not biting on the inside weedline in the NE bay by "Land of Promise." After working down the SW weedline quite a ways we elected to pull up and hit the NE bay.

Finally there were signs of life. The inside weedline was full of sunfish and the occasional bass. I switched to a Senko knock off and tried to hit the holes in the weeds and around the docks. I was seeing an occasional bass but wasn't getting anything. I started throwing the white Zoom Horny Toad and got a blow up and caught a 15" largemouth from a hole in the weeds. We kept working our way around the inside weedline and I got another fish on the white Horny Toad. I had a couple of fish either boil on the toad or follow it to the boat. When we got to the Land of Promise East dock, Wayne decided to take a trip to Mcdonald's to get us some lunch. I threw some casts with the Horny Toad off the dock but didn't get anything. I then switched to a purple Frenzy Popper and was rewarded when a 16.5" bass annihilated it. This bass was barely hooked but I managed to fight it through the weeds and land it. After a while Wayne came back with some snack wraps for me to snack on.

We elected to go back and re-trace our steps in the NE bay. I set Wayne up with a Horny Toad. In the general area where I got my 1st fish I had a good take, but I missed it. This tried to hit through the matted weeds and I didn't give it long enough to take the bait down. We kept working our way W and I started mixing in the Frenzy Popper as the weedline would allow. After throwing it for quite a bit and almost giving up on it, I got a hit and landed my 4th bass of the day. We ended up giving the NE bay one more run through but didn't garner any fish.

We then headed to the North Point of the Island and worked our way down the Western side this time. The west side was full of activity and I saw a really nice bass and a few small one's but we just couldn't get anything to go. With about an hour to go we hit the "telephone pole bay." As we worked our way toward the telephone pole in the water I got a hit and missed it. Shortly after that Wayne had a solid strike on the Horny Toad but missed it. A little bit later I got a good blow up on the Horny Toad and landed my 5th fish (pictured). Just a little ways farther down as we were exiting the telephone pole area, I got another blow up and landed my second 16.5" fish (pictured). That fish was my limit fish. We worked our way out of the telephone pole bay onto the sunkin penninsula where I had a good blow up but missed it. Shortly after that Wayne got a 15.5" bass off of the outside weedline of the sunken penninsula. That was to be our last fish of the day and it wasn't long till we had to be in anyways.

When we got to the Western dock at land of Promise everyone was waiting. It had been a rough day on most boats with most of the anglers bringing in Skunks as far as I can tell. Before the weights were calculated I found out Cyberfish jacked a 20incher (pictured) and I knew it was over. Mike ended up winning with 6fish for 19.6lbs. I took 2nd with 14.2lbs. Mike Cummins had 6 fish for 10.4 lbs and 3rd. Wayne's lone fish was good enough for 4th place.

As it turns out Mike got 2 fish in the last half hour including the 20inch Toad. I thought that mike would have caught the snot out of them, but he only got 6 keepers, but they were all nice fish.

Mike and I headed to Angeno's in Maple Grove after the Tournament for some Pizza. Yum Yum. It stormed something fierce while we were at Angeno's.
A big thanks to my partner Wayne Jacobson for turning us on to land of promise and for sharing his day in the boat with me.

Trophy In The Water

We finished the transom repairs yesterday and so today was the inaugural voyage of the Trophy for 2007. The motor didn't start on the first pull but it did start and soon I was off for a couple of hours fishing at Rock lake.

16incher takes on Kermit.

Fishing Report 6/5/2007: I arrived at the landing sometime after 7PM and put the motor through it's paces. Had a little issue with the fuel line becoming unbuttoned at the motor, but eventually got that fixed. Once I was satisfied with the condition of the motor I headed to the Rock lake Platte River Outlet (PRO). The entrance to the bay was already significantly weeded up with Rice and other weeds so the motor got bogged down pretty quick. I started at the Eastern edge of the pads and worked my way west. I was set to throw a Spro Bronze Eye, a Zoom Horny Toad, and a swim jig; I never did get around to throwing the swim jig. I fished from about 7:30 to 9:30 getting about 8-10 bass from 13" to 16". All but 1 of the bass came on the Bronze Eye (pictured), the other one came on the White Horny Toad.

During a cast, I had the reel handle come off the reel I was throwing the Bronze Eye with. Fortunately the handle landed in the boat, but I could not find the nut
I decided to do a rod and reel switch and kept right on fishing, although my distance was significantly cut back on the replacement reel.

The action on the fish was spread out with the action improving as it got darker out. I fished a fair distance West, but about 120 yards short of the beaver dam. There was a big beaver swimming around.

Hellabass hits the St. Croix...

BP vs Duffman Challenge Week 1

It's Friday and here at the Bass Pundit blog for the summer of 2007 that means BP vs Duffman Challenge results day.

Week #1
Basspastor 1
Duffman 0

No super hawgs were caught this week and Duffman's largest went 17inches. Apparently Duffman lost a toad boatside, so sad. With my 3 bass (2 Sally's, 1 Larry) that were 18"+ the BP takes week #1. I have a feeling if I don't get that boat of mine fixed quick, that this lead won't last very long. However tommorrow I will be in a boat at Beebe Lake with a Fishers of Men Club Twin Cities bass tournament.

Note: Sorry Cyberfish but I am not allowing you to compete in the Challenge. The fact that you would have won week #1 is reason enough. You can have your revenge tommorrow @ Beebe.

Lakeview Eddy's Launch 5-29-07

On 4/29 I went with Dad and the people of Lakeview Community Church on an Eddy's Launch. Dad strikes first again with a nice eater. Pictured with Launch Captain Tom.

One of the guys with a fish that had to go back. All totaled the launch had 6-8 that were to big to keep.

Dad's 2nd fish, this one may have to have gone back, 20+.

Dad with a big smile as he racks up #3

Dad packs in with #4, a good eater.

Dad catches his 4 fish limit with this one.
The Nights haul 7 plus one from 1 from Don Weinmeister.

The Story: The people of Lakeviw decided to take out a launch, this was spearheaded by Dad. It was cloudy with gathering rain showers as we headed South from Eddy's down to Rocky Reef. Our launch parked in 13ft of water and Dad landed the 3rd fish of the trip. I missed my first one of the night in this spot. After about an hour and a half of pretty sporatic action and a rainstorm we headed out by one of the other launches in about 22ft of water. In this spot Dad had the hot hand landing 3 eaters 1 over and a rock bass. On the night I went 3 keepers from 10 hits and got 1 rock bass. Dad and I did the best of anyone on the launch. We fished off the back of the launch this time and I now will seek the back out because it's easier to fish from there. All in all our launch probably landed 20+ fish with 6-8 overs and 6-8 cigars with about a dozen keepers, 7 of which were caught by Dad and I.

Once again no work on the boat today due to the chief mechanic being sick. I would say there is a 0% chance I will be out in a boat for bass opener. On Sunday Shake (Cyberfish) and Bake are comming up, so I will fish with them Sunday and Monday.

The Big Question: Bass Opener is Saturday, will the boat be ready????????

Once again I did not fish today or yesterday even though both might have been good days at the Jetty. Tonight I elected to watch Idol and On the Lot instead.

Day 3 Beaver/Townsend

Fishing Report 5-19-07: I arrived at Eddy's Jetty around 7PM. When I arrived it was cool and windy from the SE. The wind however was more E than S unlike on opener where it was about even thus allowing me to cast well. With the SE wind I decided to throw the Purple Perch Husky Jerk off the North conrner, but I quickly discoved casting was difficult and it just wasn't working out unfortunatly. I elected to switch to leech and bobber off the center Jetty harbor mouth. The spray from the waves ruled out fishing from the rock outcropping and so I fished off the North Harbor center dock. Casting proved difficult and the bobber got blown about quite a bit. I did not dress warm enough and it was cool. The wind was blowing a steady 20MPH with higher gusts. Sometime around 8:15 I got a bite and missed it. About 15minutes later I nailed a 20"+ eye, so back in the drink it went. I went back to the car and got a glove for my left, rod holding, hand. At about 8:45 I missed a bite right close to where I was standing, lost the leech. About 10 minutes later my bobber went down again and I landed a 23" Walter who bit right at my feet. The wind got worse, I was cold and called it quits about 9:15PM

BASS High Rock-
Day 2 only made a bad situation worse. Ducket pitched a -10 for the skunk penalty. Remitz dropped hard and my best angler in a 51 boat field was KVD in 14th place. Skunked for Super 6 Pick'em

Beaver FLW Fishing Challenge-More mediocrity on the FLW side of things. Sure day 2 was an overall improvement in scores but it's all petty points pretty much.

5-16-07 Eddy's Launch Trip with Dad

Tonight Dad and I went out on an Eddy's LaunchDad draws first blood but it was only a Cigar.
Dad's first keeper of the night with our Eddy's Launch Captain Tom. Dad's second cigar goes back to the lake.
Our biggest fish. It was slightly to big to keep.
It wasn't shooting fish a barrel good, or maybe it was.
Dad with the nights haul.

The story:
The launch left the dock right around 6PM and it only took about 10minutes to reach our spot in Vineland Bay. We were sitting in about 10feet of water and we never moved from this spot until we left at quarter to 10PM. The night started quickly with a guy on the back of the launch landing a nice eye in the first couple of minutes, but after that it was a long lull. We brought our own rods but the stuff I gave Dad was having all kinds of problems so we switched him to an Eddy's rod with a red hook, no beed. I was set up with a longer rod, lighter bobber, white beed, and red hook. Finally after about an hour Dad's bobber started bobbing but all that happened was a lost leech. A little while later I landed a perch. We only got perch bites catching a couple in the first two hours. Sometime a little before 8 PM Dad reeled in our first Walter, but as the pic shows it was only a cigar. I caught a few more perch then tied into our first keeper eye of the night. Not to long after my catch Dad brought in another keeper (picture). Dad caught the next walleye as well, but it was another Cigar and it went back in the lake. I followed that up with a 14.5" keeper. Dad landed the next eye but it was just a bit over 20" and so it had to go back (picture). Shortly after that, Dad caught our forth keeper. I missed a good fish. Around 9:30PM I landed our 5th and final keeper. The launch as a whole caught a bunch of fish as the barrel of fish picture shows, about 6 fish had to go back for being to big and about 6 that I saw went back for being to small. It turned out to be a really nice night weather wise because the wind died down. Dad and I also missed lots of bites, sure some were probably perch, but some were most definitely eyes as well. I cleaned the fish when we got home.

The score: Dad 5 walleye (2keeps, 2 cigar, 1 over the slot) and a couple of perch
BP 4 walleye (3Keeps 1 cigar) and about 6 perch.
