GOMH & Rock Lake Today(3/31/26)

Ice is starting to pull off the shore on Platte and Rock. One more day in the 40's before we get cold and snow. Long and Platte were looking dark. There was some open water at South Point Small Island on Platte. I think it will be a waiting game for open water, but you never know. The Platte GOMH Bay was open tonight The Intersection in Sullivan is mostly open, but there is a lot of ice in the SPRO.

GOMH & Platte Iced Up Again(3/27/24)

We got about a foot of snow from Sunday to Tuesday and much to my amazement, that combined with the cold on the back half of the storm was enough to refreeze the GOMH area and all of Platte Lake. Sullivan and Long still had open water. I didn't check Bulldog or Rock.  I'm thinking the lake will be open by Easter Sunday.

Area Ice Report

I vacuumed out the Trophy today, then went down front. A big bulge in the ice in front of our place down to Jenny's had me thinking more ice was off in our bay than there actually was. Still would not surprise me if ice is off our bay by tomorrow. Ice pushed onto shore in the E corner of F Flat. I didn't see really any extended open water on Rock, and Bulldog looked about the same as it has. The South end of Long is open. Channel Inn Bay was Open, and there was open water past North Point Small Island.

How Long Until Safe Ice In the Platte/Sullivan Area?

That is the question for today.  With all the snow we have been getting around here water temps have to be getting pretty close to locking up Platte, Erskine, Long and Bulldog.   I doubt it happens today because at 3AM it's right at freezing outside and it's supposed to warm up to 36 degrees today.

Here is the forecast for the next week plus.
If the forecast is right.  I would think I could find walkable ice by next Saturday.  I'll be getting my ice fishing stuff organized and ready next week for sure.

Platte was a surprise with the Eastern side of the lake ice free.
The view from Jenny's Access. (That is West Point on the left.)
Platte Access
I thought maybe I would be able to call Platte Lake Open when I got done fishing, but the access was still iced in.  Tomorrow is the day.
Oops, didn't get it focused right.
The line broke a the pike was flopping up on shore.  It almost got away; I had to go down on my knee to grab it.  First bullhead of the year is a toothy.  It bit in shallow water, so I wasn't entirely sure if it was a fish or maybe I had gotten caught on a weed.  I set the hook and it felt like a small fish and I thought maybe it might be a silver bullhead, nope toothy.  That was the only bite I had tonight.
Red Wing Blackbird
There was a noisy male Mallard duck tonight over on the SE side.

Trophy Is Out Of Storage

I have to get it cleaned up, but now the tow vehicle is now at the shop.  Hopefully the Expedition will be ready by the time my parents head South on Friday morning.

It got up into the mid 50's today.  And it's 50's in the forecast as far as the eye can see.
I will update with an ice out progress report later on tonight.  There was open water on the South end of and along the western shore of Long Lake.

Update:

Ice is not totally out in the Sullivan Platte River Outlet; With the dark ice and calm conditions I was able to see the ice that is there clearly.  It got cold tonight fast once the sun went down.

Ice was officially called out on Lake Minnetonka today.

Rock and Long Ice Out, Platte 90% Open

Rock Lake Looking Northeast

Rock Lake looking Southeast
The lakes gave me a surprise today.  I took mom into Onamia and Onamia Lake was wide open.  I went to Bulldog first tonight and it was about the same.  Next I drove North Platte Lake Drive and all of Platte that I could see was open except the northeast corner.  I decided to go take a look at Rock and was shocked to discover it wide open.  The wind was such that it was unfishable.  Next I checked Long and it looked wide open.  Then I went to Jenny's and there was still some ice there .  There was also ice at the Platte Lake Access so I am not calling Platte Lake Open as I couldn't get from the access to Jenny's in a boat today.  I was a little to pumped up from the open water and ended up spilling the minnow bucket when I arrived at the GOMH.  Thank goodness I had my fishing towel along to help clean up the water.  I didn't fish very long and didn't get a bite.
