Gill Nets Lord Clarence’s Cup

July 9, 2009

Update; the 2009 Round Lake Bowfin Classic (invitational) was a roaring success. Held on July 3-5 it was the largest bowfin invitational since the inaugural year of 1951. Two out of stators Gill McElroy from Alabama, and Leroy Finn from Texas, set expectations high, and McElroy didn't disappoint ending the first day with a total weight of 24 lbs. 3 oz. While Leroy Finn’s unexpected mechanical problems kept him out of the running the first day, up and comer Scales McClanahann had a good showing but finished the tournament out of the money. Cya Ledin, also a first timer, surprised everyone by finishing the tournament in 2nd place. “I thought I had a chance, but going up against a legend like McElroy it just wasn’t realistic for me to win this tournament my first time out, it’s just too bad second place doesn’t get your name on the cup,” Ledin said. McElroy ended up taking the triple-crown; first bowfin caught, largest bowfin, and the total weight category taking home Lord Clarence's Cup. This was the first time in 58 years that the cup was won by an out of stator. McElroy’s largest fish came up just short of the Minnesota state record at 10 lbs. 7 oz. which just happened to be the first Bowfin caught of the tournament. He also finished the 3 day tournament with a total weight of 56 lbs. 2 oz. This also was a tournament record. McElroy credited his success to years of dedication to Bowfin angling, "It's been a dream of mine to compete in the most coveted bowfin angling tournament in the country, maybe even the world, so to win it my first time out was a great accomplishment, although I was disappointed I came up just 7 oz. shy of breaking the Minnesota state Bowfin record, when I come back next year to defend my title that will be my main focus". Leroy Finn’s bad first day proved to be his downfall. “I just couldn’t give McElroy that much of a head start and expect to win. I’ll be back next year, God willing, and give McElroy a run for his money”, Finn explained. Tournament commissioner Butch Herrington was ecstatic about the outcome, “Whenever you have two world class Bowfin anglers like McElroy and Finn enter your tournament you can expect a great things, and they didn’t disappoint!” Herrington exclaimed. This year’s tournament was dedicated to Pops Wavely, a.k.a. “Pops”, the Round Lake Bowfin Invitational inaugural winner. He passed away earlier in the year doing what he loved, fishing. “Pops was one person you could always count on being here and when he wasn’t it just wasn’t the same”, Herrington said.

Gill Says Cya to Ledin
There was a strong group of Bowfin fisherman with the likes of Gil McElroy, Leeroy Finn, and Cya Ledin coming back to the Classic. The 2010 Round Lake Bowfin Classic started out with a bang. Gil McElroy captured the 1st Bowfin caught title catching one in the first ten minutes of the competition. Gil then brought in 3 more Bowfin for a total day’s weight of 27 pounds 2 ounces. Was Gil going to run away this season with the Triple Crown again? Dee Fourell a second time Bowfin Classic participant came on hot bringing in the largest bowfin of Day 1 at 9 pounds 8 ounces. By the end of day one Gil had a slight edge over Dee Fourell in the total weight category. Also on the board were Cya Ledin and Jeff McGee with one bowfin each. Day two of the tournament started with Harry Frye catching a monster 11 pound 2 ounce bowfin taking the lead in the largest bowfin category. Gil McElroy stayed consistent reeling in 2 more bowfin on the day. All of a sudden the bowfin where striking on Cya Ledin. She reeled in 4 bowfin that weighed in at 29 pounds 15 ounces. This gave Cya the lead over Gil McElroy. That was the end of day two bringing the tournament to the final morning. Gil McElroy came in at 11: 51 A.M with a 4 pound 4 ounce Bowfin giving him the win in the total weight category beating Cya Ledin by 5 ounces. In the end Harry Frye held on to the lead in the largest Bowfin category with his monster 11 pound 2 ounce bowfin only 3 ounces shy of breaking the Minnesota state record for largest bowfin. Harry Frye said, “I am a man about quality, I have always dreamed of getting my name etched into the coveted Lord Clarence’s cup and to see it happen is a dream come true.” In second place in the largest bowfin category was Cya Ledin and in third was Dee Fourell for largest Bowfin in the classic. For the total weight Category Gil McElroy edged out a victory over Cya Ledin with a total weight of 57 pounds 8 ounces. Gil McElroy said, “It was tough catching the big Bowfin this tournament but in the end I did enough things right to come out on top and take down my competition to win the total weight category again. I want to dedicate my win to Pops Wavely we all miss you Pops.”

.” Cya Ledin said,
“I did my best but I just couldn’t produce and I left the window open for Gil. Bottom line is you can’t do that when you are fishing against the World’s greatest Bowfin fishermen. I lost by 5 ounces because Gil was relentless.” Dee Fourell took third place in the total weight category. Later it came to be known that Wisconsin Resident Dee Fourell was fishing without a Minnesota State Fishing License. Dee Fourell said, “I have had my fishing license all along these allegations are false and people are just barnsour that I fished like a man this tournament.” He was later stripped of his third place titles and banned from the tournament. Dee Fourell is protesting that it wasn’t written in the bi laws. Top Bowfin fisherman and Alabama native Leeroy Finn had a disappointing tournament. Leeroy Finn said, “I Just couldn’t get anything going this year I had a great time, it’s like what they say if you caught fish all the time fishing would be called catching. I am not satisfied with my participation ribbon and next season I am looking to get my name in Lord Clarence’s Cup once again. It is going to be a long trip home but I will be back next year.” The Commissioner thought it was another great classic in the books. Butch Harrington said, “First of all I want to say Dee Fourell is a rebel. He is being fined by the International Bowfin Committee and the Minnesota DNR has an ongoing investigation. Other than that I think the tournament went great. That was the closest tournament in the 52 year history of the Bowfin Classic. I want to congratulate Harry Frye on his 11 pound 2 ounce bowfin. It’s always good when you are getting someone new on the cup. I know a lot of people were disappointed to see Gil McElroy win it again but there is a lot of respect to the Bowfin King. I also want to thank my wife Laura Harrington for being the official weigher, she is great and without her the tournament wouldn’t be a classic.” Another classic in the books with Harry Frye and Gill McElroy hoisting Lord Clarence’s Cup.
