Jim Moynagh On Fishing Beds

Tips to Catch Nesting/Bedding Bass

This is the best most complete article on catching bass off of beds that I have ever read.

If you ever read or hear someone say they can catch any largemouth they come across on a bed then they are BSing you.

Also an important point that I thin should be derived from this article is that people who catch big female bass sight fishing are just catching a female that happens to be in the area.  The actual bed belongs to a male bass.  A female may help in making nests, but they don't keep them or if they do keep them it isn't for very long at all.

Platte Lake Is Open

The view from Platte Lake Public Access
The Lake was 98% Ice Free tonight, so I'm calling it open.  Man that was fast.  Just goes to show what not having snow cover and a bunch of sunny days will do to the ice.  I didn't get any bullheads tonight.  I did get a bass and a pike at Rock and also had one cut my line.

Long Lake Open
Bulldog Open
Rock Lake 80%
Sullivan ???

About Fishing in MN:
I've fished 20 days already this year.  If you are interested in reading about my trips this isn't the best of my blogs to do it at as that I don't record all of my fishing trips here.  The Bass Pundit Fishing Log Blog is where all of them are at.

No Fooling, 1st Bullhead of the Year!

19" Glow Cubby Mini-Mite
5:30-8:00PM
Conditions: Warm and breezy out of the South, some clouds, some sun.  Thunderstorms popping up to the East and SE.

Tonight I went to visit Jenny to see her quilts after that the plan was to look at the lakes and maybe throw a line in the water.  I was surprised by how open the water was at Bulldog Lake.  I would say it was 15% Open.

Rock Lake didn't look open at all; The same with the East end of Platte Lake.  I was surprised by how open Sullivan and Platte were at the GOMH.
Platte River Outlet Area 85% Open.  Ice was in the area by the river mouth. And water was open well into Sullivan Lake itself.

Chanel Inn Bay and all the way past the South Island
With the amount of water the lakes should be open by some time early next week.  I was planning to leave to watch Survivor tonight, but it was so warm I decided to stay and keep fishing.  I was fishing in shorts and a T-Shirt under my Cabela's jacket.
You can see how low the water level is in this picture.

On a whim I decided to go and fish the Platte side where it was calm.  That is where I got the fish.
It was quite a night with swans, ducks, geese, and sandhill cranes flying over making a racket.  It finally calmed down and the moon came out for a bit.
